James 1:22-25 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; or he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
These verses tell us that the WORD, the Bible, and specifically, the “law of liberty” which is the New Covenant, is a mirror of who we are in Christ. We must view our identity through this spiritual mirror! The Word of God is a mirror to what is already a reality in our born-again spirit. But it won’t impact you until you see it; until it becomes real to you.
What do you see?
Faith is the revelation of the will of God in the heart of man that produces certainty, conviction and action. (Barry Bennett)
When you have “revelation,” you not only believe with your mind, but it becomes real to you in your heart. It becomes your new identity. You will see yourself through the lens of God’s Word.
What’s real to you? What are you seeing?
Vision of the heart is a harvest of the words we have heard and believed. We are either giving place to words of fear and limitations or we are giving place to God’s promises. (Barry Bennett)
What does the Bible say about who God is? What does it say about His nature and His will concerning you?
John 14:7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
Jesus is the perfect representation of the nature and will of God. We only need to look to Him to know God.
The Apostle Paul said:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. (Ephesians 1:3)
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)
And Jesus said, “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. (Luke 12:32)
Getting our needs met is a matter of believing what we can’t see or feel is already a reality;
seeing with our spiritual eyes.
Because it's God's Word, the Bible is like a mirror where you can see who we truly are in your reborn spirit. As you spend time in scripture, you learn what God says about you, and your new identity in Christ. As you learn these new things about yourself, you will find you start to behave in different ways because what you do flows out of who you think you are.
You become a doer of the word. That's when you will begin to see the victories God has promised you.
“Some have experienced the most frustrating time of their lives by earnestly desiring the results the Word will produce but neglecting to do what the word instructs.” (Dennis Burke-How To Meditate God’s Word)
