What is the Blessing?
Are you blessed? Do you know if you are?
Before we begin, let’s clarify that we are not talking about a religious cliché in which most Christians would emphatically say “oh yes, I’m blessed” as they recall certain good things. The Blessing is much more than the proper thing to say in Christian circles. It’s more than the world’s view of measuring your economic status, material wealth, family circumstances, career success, etc. In spite of the condition of all these things, if you are a born-again child of God, you are blessed, praise God!
Let me explain.
What does it actually mean to be blessed? To answer that, we have to go back to the Garden of Eden. This is when God himself established The Blessing on mankind.
Genesis 1:28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
These spoken words of God over humanity were more than a command to populate the earth. There wasn’t any pain, problems, sickness, negative emotions, strife, thorns, weeds, or anything impure or imperfect in the Garden of Eden; everything was perfect. Adam and Eve lived in the Blessing until they gave their authority to Satan by eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Through this direct disobedience to God, they died spiritually (became separated from God) and let the curse and all the effects of it in (Genesis 2:17). Now, the world itself is under the control of Satan, his powers and principalities. You can read the whole account in the book of Genesis.
2 Corinthians 4:3-4
But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world (Satan) hath blinded the minds of them which believe not. (parentheses mine)
Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
The blessing is a real promise from God to His creation.
“With that one blessing, God bestowed on the family of man everything they would ever need to become all He created them to be, and do all He had destined them to do. He released the only Blessing any of us would ever need.” (Kenneth Copeland, The Blessing of The Lord). It began in the Garden of Eden when God blessed man and has continued to be God’s will and purpose for man. Through Abraham, He re-established The Blessing.
In the book of Genesis 22:18, God speaks to Abraham, (the father of our faith) saying, “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (Parentheses mine).
The Greek word for “seed” is “SPERMA,” and it means “‘the seed’ i.e. the grain or kernel which contains within itself the germ of the future plant” (Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon). In the following scriptures, the apostle Paul makes it clear that this verse is speaking of one, namely Christ and reaffirms God’s plan for us.
Galatians 3:16 says, Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Galatians 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Galatians 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.
The Blessing IS the empowerment of God; His favor, spoken over mankind. It gives us power and authority over our lives and to influence the world around us. We are blessed to be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth. (Genesis 1:28).
The one Blessing recorded in Genesis 1:28 set forth God’s will for all mankind, for all time. Now through our faith in Jesus Christ, the Blessing can be established in our lives, just as it was intended in the beginning. Regardless of your current circumstances, if you have put your faith in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, then you have been blessed. However, it is not automatic. You may not be experiencing the Blessing that God purchased for you with the blood of His son. God has (past tense) provided everything you’ll ever need, but will you receive it by faith?
Galatians 3:9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.
